Living a Meaningful and Purposeful Life

You can find a great level of meaning and purpose in many different things: work, family, love, hobbies, volunteering, etc. However, you will never find true fulfillment in any of these. You may not appreciate what I am going to say, but please hear me out. What if there actually is a supreme being, God if you will, who created you for an amazing purpose and loves you extravagantly? Before you dismiss me, really think about it. Science has never proven that God does not exist. In fact, science has also never proven that evolution is true. Evolution is a theory. To many people, God is also just a theory. So shouldn’t you also consider the “God theory” before coming to a conclusion? I think many people don’t believe in God because they haven’t been taught anything about the God of the Bible or because they have been taught wrong things about God.

Contrary to popular belief, the God of the Bible is not an angry, old, white-haired, and bearded man who delights in throwing the book at anyone who makes the slightest mistake. That image of God could not be farther from the truth! While it is possible for someone to carelessly skim through the Bible and get that impression, if you really read through the Bible, especially the New Testament, you will find that what I am saying is the truth.

Let me say this plainly and emphatically. From the beginning, it has always been God’s plan to have a family. And not family as most people know it, but, rather, a family that is saturated with love, joy, peace, purpose, fulfillment, and wholeness. Consider with me what is written in the Bible about the origin of life.

In Genesis, the first book of the Bible, it is recorded how God created the universe: the earth, the sun, the moon, the stars, the plants, the animals, and everything else in the world. God created all of these things perfectly. There were no flaws of any kind. There was no decay and no death. Nothing was bad! After creating all these things, God said to Himself, “It is good.”

However, all of these magnificent things did not fulfill God’s plan to have a family. So God then crafted the most phenomenal part of all creation: a human being. God didn’t just create a human arbitrarily. He created Adam and Eve, the first human beings, in His own image and likeness. They were perfect. Completely perfect. They had the exact nature and characteristics of God, similar to how children have the nature and characteristics of their parents. So after creating them, God had a family and said to Himself, “It is very good!” God delighted in Adam and Eve. He was overjoyed with them! He loved them with a perfect love from the very beginning before they could even try to do something to earn His love. Just like parents delight in and love a newborn baby.

So then God gave Adam and Eve dominion over the entire earth. Every plant, every animal, and every living thing belonged to Adam and Eve. They had power and authority over all of nature. In delegating this dominion to Adam and Eve, God gave His control of the world to Adam and Eve. He told them to, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it.” From this point forward, God was no longer in control of every little thing that happened on the earth. Anything that happened after this was either a result of a natural occurrence or of Adam and Eve exercising their dominion.

Well, that is all well and good, but what happened to cause the world to become the confusing and evil place that it is today? The answer is that Adam and Eve disobeyed God and forfeited their dominion of the earth to the devil. God had given Adam and Eve one thing that they could not do, and that was to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They were innocent and ignorant of evil so God gave them this instruction because He wanted them to remain that way. If they would eat that fruit, they would learn about evil, experience spiritual death, and lose their dominion and authority.

Sometime later, the devil came along and deceived Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. He was successful in causing her to doubt what God had originally told them, and so they ate the fruit. What happened next is powerfully significant. Based on the common concept that God is just waiting on people to mess up so He can whoop them, one would expect God to instantly get angry at Adam and Eve and curse them. However, that is not what happened. God instantly became angry at the devil and cursed him instead! Then God told the devil that a son (speaking of Jesus) would be born from Eve’s lineage who would rise up and conquer him. As a result of Adam and Eve’s disobedience to God and obedience to the devil, Adam and Eve became legal captives of the devil, and the devil took over Adam and Eve’s place of authority and dominion in the world. The Bible says that now the devil is “the god of this world” and that “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”

This is the answer to the problem of evil. The reason bad things happen to good people is because we live in a fallen world and the devil has legal control of it. God does not control every little thing that happens. Jesus explained that it is the devil who kills, steals, and destroys our lives but that He had come to give us the abundant, God-kind of life! Now God never sends bad things or trials of any kind to people in order to “teach them something.” God will use for good what the devil intends for bad, but Jesus said if we ask God for something good, like a piece of bread, He will not give us something bad, like a stone.

So the devil is in control of the world and has every person captive and impossibly bound in sin; now what? God does the unthinkable. God voluntarily laid aside His power and ability and, in the form of Jesus Christ, left the majesty of heaven and was born as a helpless baby in this sin-cursed world. And He did it because of love; because He loves you and every person that has ever and will ever exist. Jesus came into this world as an inside agent to rescue every person from our evil master, the devil and to be a once-for-all sacrifice for the disobedience and sin of the entire world! God came to rescue and restore His family!

In addition to purchasing forgiveness for the entire human race, Jesus had several other critical roles while He lived here on the earth. Jesus showed us how to truly live as a human being. He revealed our true identity as sons and daughters of the Almighty God, and He restored us to our place of authority and taught us how to walk in it.

The Bible says that Jesus is the “last Adam.” The first Adam lived as a son of God and exercised his place of authority over the world. However, because of disobedience to God, Adam lost his sonship and his authority, and through this, he became the head of an entire race of fallen men and women. But the good news is that Jesus became the last Adam. Jesus, as a fully human being, lived a life of perfect obedience to God. Because of this, He restored our sonship and our place of authority, and through this, Jesus became the head of an entirely new race of men and women who have been “born again” and are completely new creations. These men and women are God’s family! The incredibly awesome part is that Jesus completely restores us to our true identity as children of God. He accomplished everything for us that we were unable to do ourselves. When Jesus died on the cross, He declared, “It is finished!” This gift of salvation and restoration is absolutely free. There is nothing we can do to earn it. God loves us more than words can even describe so we don’t need to try to earn His love by being a “good person.” The invitation from Jesus to follow Him and live with Him is completely free and open for every single person, no matter how good or bad they have lived.

So this is our purpose as human beings. To glorify God by living as He originally intended for us to live. To be his children and to have dominion in the world like Jesus did by healing the sick, raising the dead, and bringing freedom to people on every front. This dominion is not dominion over people, but rather, it is dominion over all the power of the devil and over nature. It is also authority to liberate people from sin and to empower them to be victorious in life. Followers of Jesus have the same power within them as Jesus had to do the same things that Jesus did. In fact, Jesus is literally living His life through each of His followers. Knowing God’s unconditional love and the value He places on you is where true fulfillment comes from. And living like Jesus is what gives us true meaning and purpose in this world.

So in conclusion, you are not bad or worthless. If you have done bad things, there is no condemnation by God because that is not who you really are! God only has love and forgiveness towards you. You are valuable, and you have purpose!
